Writer, Board Game Designer &

Horror Fanatic

I'm Jon Cohn, and I am a horror addict (Hi Jon).

I grew up in the 90's, and got sucked into horror by two people whose first names are still a mystery to me. Between RL Stine's Goosebumps books, and DJ McHale's Are You Afraid of the Dark, I never stood a chance.

I’m constantly watching horror movies and TV shows. In fact, my wife and I met over our obsessive fandom of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and we both happened to use Buffy quotes in our wedding vows.

I'm born and raised in San Diego, having taken a brief 6-year detour to LA to take a crack at Film School and work within that industry. Spoiler alert, it didn't work out. So with a Film Production BFA in hand, I came back home to SD to not use my degree at all, and instead go in an entirely different direction.

For the last decade or so, I've been a professional board game designer as my day job, working on licenses like Ghostbusters, Ninja Turtles, Disney, and Dragonball. I've also got a few of my own design, including the narrative-based horror game Grind House thats basically a choose-your adventure party game with like 300 interactive short stories.

I got into full time writing in 2019, starting with short stories that were published in anthologies like Diablo House and the Bellevue Literary Review. My first Novel, an island Folk-horror book called The Island Mother, won Publishers Weekly’s 2022 Booklife Prize for best horror fiction. I followed that up the following year with Slashtag, about a bonkers haunted reality show that goes wrong in all the right ways.

My wife and I live in San Diego CA with our two little dogs Gizmo and Luna, where we live for Halloween. Seriously, I spend at least 3 months a year planning a huge murder mystery party that we have hosted annually for the last 8 years.
